After deciding I needed a lighter base option other than foundation, I picked up the NYX BB (Beauty Balm) at Target with 30% off the RRP, making sure to select the fairest shade (BBCR01 – Nude). It claims to brighten, smooth and moisturize. It’s also cruelty-free!
The product comes in a 30mL squeeze tube, and smells faintly like sunscreen. It’s not off-putting, but if you are super sensitive to smells, test it in-store first.
The product blends well on the skin, and dries down within a few minutes, although doesn’t completely set (has a very slight tacky feel to it – probably why it can be used as a primer). When using this on its own, I suggest using a setting powder, as it is pretty dewy on the skin. I think this would work best on normal to dry skin types.
The shade is a perfect match for my skin tone (fair with pink undertones). Although the swatch below looks very dark, when rubbed into the skin it blends in perfectly. For reference, I wear NARS Sheer Glow foundation in the shade Monte Blanc.
It’s definitely a light coverage cream; it balances out discolouration, as well as lightly concealing blemishes. It’s not going to give you the same amount of coverage as a foundation, but it’s perfect for when you want a little something on your face. This would be particularly good for high school students, especially those with strict ‘no makeup’ school rules.
All up I’m really enjoying the NYX BB cream, and hope to find more brands with BB creams light enough for us fair-toned ladies.
